The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV – Bundesministerium für Digitales und Verkehr) is continuing its funding support for alternative drive systems in rail transport. A third call for submissions for the procurement and retrofitting of alternative drives in rail transport is planned for the summer of 2023.

With its Alternative Drives in Rail Transport guideline (Richtlinie zur Förderung alternativer Antriebe im Schienenverkehr), the BMDV has been supporting the market activation and the market ramp-up of alternative drive technologies for rail transport since February 2021. The guideline represents one of four pillars of the rail electrification programme, which is intended to increase the degree of electrification of rail transport in Germany.

The third funding call will focus on pure alternative drives for rail transport. Funding will be provided for:
  • Multiple units for passenger rail transport with locally emission-free drives (e.g. battery and fuel cell-based)
  • Locomotives for rail freight and shunting operations with locally emission-free drive systems (e.g. battery and fuel cell-based)
  • Charging and refuelling infrastructure for the operation of alternative drive systems as well as electrolysis plants for the production of hydrogen
  • Studies on possible applications of alternative drive systems in rail transport (local passenger, rail freight and shunting)

Further information on the funding call and details on the application procedure are still to be announced.
