The districts of Tübingen and Reutlingen are together advancing the issue of green hydrogen with the ‘Hy-NATuRe’ project (Hydrogen – Neckar-Alb-Tuebingen-Reutlingen). Hydrogen stakeholders from the region assembled at the launch event on Tuesday, 27 September 2022 in Motorworld Metzingen.

Entitled ‘HyNATuRe’ (Hydrogen – Neckar-Alb-Tuebingen-Reutlingen), a joint roadmap for the successful establishment of a regional hydrogen economy is to be developed. The most important goals here are the production of green hydrogen in the region, strengthening climate-friendly mobility – particularly by running hydrogen-based buses, commercial vehicles and trains – as well as the replacement of CO2-intensive grey hydrogen with regional green hydrogen in industrial processes.

The official project launch took place on 27 September 2022 in Motorworld Metzingen, not far from the only hydrogen refuelling station in the region. Here hydrogen stakeholders (regional companies and institutions) met to discuss the roadmap for the coming weeks.

‘Hy-NATuRe’ as a continuation of the HyStarter hydrogen concept

In October 2021, the HyStarter hydrogen concept for the Reutlingen and Tübingen districts was presented. The region was one of nine hydrogen regions in Germany to be selected for the HyLand funding programme of the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV). Both districts have since successfully applied for follow-up, HyExperts funding. Over the course of the ‘Hy-NATuRe’ HyExpert project, the use of the potentials of green hydrogen for the energy and transport transition will be advanced for another year. The project is funded by the BMDV under the National Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP2) in the amount of 400,000 euros. The funding guideline is coordinated by NOW GmbH and implemented by Project Management Jülich (PtJ).

The district administrators for the Reutlingen and Tübingen districts are pleased that the innovative ideas from the HyStarter phase can now continue to be finalized and specified: ‘Not only will hydrogen make a major contribution to the energy and transport transition, but it offers us a huge opportunity as an economic location,” explained district administrator Dr. Ulrich Fiedler. Joachim Walter, district administrator of the Tübingen district emphasized: “Funding technological innovations is a key task for a sustainable future and a local contribution to implementing European climate protection goals.”
