141 million euros allocated for alternatives drives for railways in 2022
The BMDV is continuing the funding programme for alternative drives in rail transport. Today the second call for applications was launched to fund climate-friendly, alternative drives in local rail passenger and freight transport. 141 million euros will be made available to applications approved in 2022.
Federal Transport Minister Dr. Volker Wissing: “For us to reach our climate protection goals in transport, we need CO2 neutral technologies for rail transport as well. That’s why we’re supporting rail transport companies in making the switch from diesel locomotives to clean vehicles powered by batteries and fuel cells on non-electrified route segments. We’re also supporting the use of innovative hybrid locomotives in freight transport.”
With the guideline on funding alternative drives in rail transport, the BMDV has supported the market activation and the market ramp-up of alternative drive technologies on railways since February 2021. This constitutes one of four columns of the train electrification programme, which raises the level of electrification of rail transport services for passenger and freight transport.
The following technologies are focal points of this funding call:
- For local rail passenger transport: battery-electric as well as fuel cell-based multiple units,
- For rail freight transport: hybrid drive technologies (e.g. dual-mode and battery hybrid technology).
- In addition, the construction of charging and refuelling infrastructure for the alternative drives concerned as well as electrolysis plants for generating hydrogen and
- Studies on possible applications in the relevant route network are eligible for funding.
The call can be downloaded here and applications may be submitted until 31/08/2022. Funding is awarded though a competitive process.
Do you have questions about the current funding call?
In an online seminar on 8 July 2022 from 10 to 11am, NOW GmbH and Project Management Jülich (PtJ) will explore the contents of the new funding call. There will also be an opportunity to pose any questions you have have.
