Hydrogen is a clean, safe and innovative energy carrier with many positive features: It is fully climate neutral, it reduces geopolitical dependencies on fossil fuels and it promotes global competitiveness of the European industry.

Hydrogen produced from renewable energies will increasingly replace fossil fuels, thereby, the political goal to halve the global CO₂ emissions by 2050 can be reached.

This change of paradigm from a fossil fuel-based to a hydrogen-based economy demands for numerous technical, infrastructural and regulatory innovations.

Energy technologies, which are used for the production, storage, transport and conversion of hydrogen, have to be developed continuously in order to improve energy efficiency, robustness, safety and profitability.

In this regard, new materials and manufacturing technologies play an important role. The scientists and engineers of the department Hydrogen Technology develop novel materials and related production processes in the following areas

Electrolysis
Electrode materials and 3D structures for alkaline electrolysis

Solid-State Storage
Materials and systems for hydrogen storage by means of hydrogen-solid reactions, e.g. metal hydrides, complex hydrides, hydride composites, MOFs, graphite

Hydrolysis
Materials and systems for hydrogen generation by means of water-solid reactions
