With the commissioning of an electrolyser in Wunsiedel in the Fichtel mountains, and the turning of the sod for an electrolyser in Pfeffenhausen as part of the HyPerformer region HyBayern, the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) is funding two pioneering projects for the regional production of green hydrogen.

Dr. Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital and Transport: “Green hydrogen provides the opportunity to make mobility climate-friendly. Our funding of two electrolysers helps green hydrogen to be produced and used in Bavaria. This allows us to strengthen regional industry and advance climate-friendly mobility. Future transport projects will also benefit from regional experiences in hydrogen production, distribution and use, both nationally and internationally.”

Over the past two days, two projects were launched because of the support of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) in the field of regional hydrogen production in Bavaria:

On 14 September, one of the BMDV-funded electrolysers was inaugurated as part of a project by the city and Wunsiedel’s municipal utilities (Stadtwerke SWW Wunsiedel GmbH), Rießner Gase GmbH, Lichtenfels and Siemens AG. BMDV funding in the amount of 1.3 million euros covers the expansion of an existing electrolyser with a capacity of 6 to 8.5 megawatts (MW). 2.5 MW of electrolysis capacity is allocated for hydrogen applications in the transport area, such as trucks, buses and municipal vehicles with fuel cell drives.

The hydrogen generation plant converts renewable energy from the region into hydrogen, which will be used for various applications in the mobility and industrial sectors. The electricity required for production will come from certified green power plants in Germany from surrounding areas.

The Wunsiedel region is also among the BMDV’s HyLand hydrogen regions. In the first round of the HyLand competition, the region was selected as a HyExpert region in 2019 and received approximately €300,000 in funding for creating a hydrogen concept.

Groundbreaking for electrolyser in the HyPerformer region of HyBayern

With the turning of the sod on 15 September, the construction of an electrolyser in Pfeffenhausen (Landshut district) for green hydrogen production was underway.

The electrolyser is part of the HyBayern HyPerformer project. The districts of Landshut, Ebersberg and Munich won in the first round of the HyLand competition in the HyPerformer category. The BMDV is supporting the project with up to 20 million euros in investment grants for hydrogen applications in transport. The goal is to establish a circular economy from green hydrogen generation, distribution and use in zero-emission hydrogen vehicle fleets, together with transport operators, energy suppliers, industry, trade and commerce.
