The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV – Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz, nukleare Sicherheit und Verbraucherschutz) has launched the new funding round of the “Export Initiative Environmental Protection” (EXI – Exportinitiative Umweltschutz). Project outlines can be submitted until 1 April 2023. NOW GmbH is acting as the contact for the area of “green hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in decentralized energy supply”.

Funding is available for projects submitted by German green tech companies in the areas of circular economy, water and wastewater management, sustainable application of off-grid green hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, sustainable consumption and environmentally friendly mobility solutions, as well as sustainable urban and regional development. Project outlines can be submitted until 1 April 2023.

Particularly those German companies in the commercial sector –and explicitly including small and medium-sized enterprises – associations and organisations as well as universities and non-university research institutions can apply for funding with their GreenTech project proposals.

The EXI projects should be groundbreaking in terms of the application of smart GreenTech components and innovative solutions in the field of environmental technologies “Made in Germany”. The transfer of German know-how, products and services in the green tech sector can thus contribute to the implementation of both stricter environmental standards and legal requirements. The green hydrogen and fuel cell technologies area, which includes stationary solutions for off-grid and decentralized power supply, in particular in developing and emerging countries, will be monitored by NOW GmbH as a programme management association. NOW GmbH is also available for consultation regarding funding or shaping the content of project ideas. Further information as well as contact details can be found here.

About the ‘Export Initiative Environmental Protection’ (EXI) of the BMUV

Since 2016, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV – Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz, nukleare Sicherheit und Verbraucherschutz) has been supporting German green tech SMEs to spread innovative “Made in Germany” environmental technologies with its Export Initiative for Environmental Protection (EXI – Exportinitiative Umweltschutz) funding programme. The aim is to create optimised environmental conditions for sustainable development, improved environmental and better quality of life (SDG implementation) in the target countries.

By supporting suitable infrastructures, the EXI projects help to implement green public services and environmentally responsible services worldwide.

Since 2022, Zukunft – Umwelt – Gesellschaft (ZUG) gGmbH has been supporting the Federal Ministry for the Environment in carrying out its tasks as the project management agency for the Export Initiative Environmental Protection.

Information on submitting project outlines

Project outlines can be submitted until 1 April 2023 (23:59 CEST). The submission deadline is not a cut-off deadline. However, outlines received late may only be considered in the next round. The basis for the new funding round is the currently valid guideline for the support of measures in the area of export of green and sustainable (environmental) infrastructure (Richtlinie zur Förderung von Maßnahmen im Bereich des Exports von grüner und nachhaltiger (Umwelt-) Infrastruktur) of 30 April 2021: www.exportinitiative-umweltschutz.de/foerderung/foerderrichtlinie
