The requirements for refueling station components increase with the amount of hydrogen dispensed. Up to now, passenger car dispensers with average dispensing quantities of approx. 5 kg/refueling operation have been established. With the development of (heavy) commercial vehicles, larger quantities of hydrogen must be dispensed in a shorter time under more extreme conditions. Each technology approach of the OEMs (use of sLH2, CcH2, gH2) requires its own research and development work, whether for the communication interface, the refueling protocols, or the dispensers. In addition to dispensers, which include couplers, hoses, and breakaways, compressors with the necessary throughput are also pivotal when it comes to bringing commercial vehicles to market. Compressors are still costly and one of the most vulnerable components of the service station, so research and development projects are looking at overcoming this challenge.
