Wissing: “Establishing Hydrogen Innovation and Technology Centre can get underway.”

The Hydrogen Innovation and Technology Centre (ITZ – Innovations- und Technologiezentrum für Wasserstoff) will support companies in future in their development activities in the transport area. This covers in particular, services in the highly-specialized testing and certification field that are not currently available on the market. The centre will also facilitate international cooperation in terms of setting standards as well as offering small and medium-sized businesses in particular, a development environment in which to position themselves for international competition.

Dr. Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital and Transport: “Hydrogen represents the opportunity to design broad sections of mobility and the economy in a climate-neutral manner. Before we can make optimum use of hydrogen as an energy source, we still have to invest a lot in research and development. And we are doing exactly that. The feasibility study for an Innovation and Technology Centre confirms the approach of the BMDV. Now we can turn to the implementation phase. Up to 290 million euros are earmarked as BMDV start-up funding for all four locations and the federal states also wish to contribute to the centres. We are counting on innovation, science and technological neutrality in the fight against climate change.”

The ITZ will be located in four sites: Chemnitz, Duisburg, Pfeffenhausen and a north German cluster for shipping and aviation applications (Bremen/ Bremerhaven, Hamburg and Stade).
