NOW GmbH celebrates an anniversary: In 15 years, the federally owned company has developed from a small organisation focusing on the “National Innovation Programme Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology” into a knowledge centre with broad expertise in climate-friendly mobility and the supply of energy. Its goal: a climate-neutral society.
Since 2008, NOW GmbH has been supporting the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport in shaping a climate-friendly mobility system. Over the years, the portfolio has expanded considerably. Today, 235 employees are working on technologies and concepts within the scope of 15 mandates that enable the path to a climate-neutral society – across all technologies and modes of transport.
At a ceremony today that was attended by representatives of the commissioning federal ministries including the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport Affairs, the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection as well as project executing agencies and research institutes, participants had the opportunity to take a brief look back and, above all, to look forward. Federal Minister of Transport Dr. Volker Wissing paid tribute to the support NOW GmbH has provided over the past 15 years in the development of innovative technologies and concepts.
Federal Minister Dr. Volker Wissing: “We are striving to make transport climate-friendly and innovative in all areas. We will achieve this with new drive technologies, the suitable refuelling and charging infrastructure as well as intelligent, technology-open and cross-modal concepts. NOW has the network and the expertise to successfully meet these challenges in the future. This makes it a valuable partner for the federal government.”

NOW GmbH has been supporting the German government in its climate and industrial policy goals since 2008. One of the most important tasks of the federally owned company is to develop funding programmes relating to climate-neutral mobility and energy supply, to accompany and evaluate them. The experts at NOW GmbH supervise projects in the areas of hydrogen, fuel cells, batteries and renewable fuels; they rethink mobility and fuels for cars, buses, trains, commercial vehicles, ships and aircraft – and accompany the construction and further development of the charging infrastructure as well as hydrogen filling stations for cars and trucks. In the process, the regulatory framework is closely monitored – on a national, EU and international level.
