Trucks will be now able to charge directly in the port with up to 300 kW without unhitching. In addition, the project partnership also provides important research data for future transport flows and charging requirements.
On 6 November 2024, Mer Germany GmbH opened the first fast-charging points at the Cruise Center Steinwerder in the Port of Hamburg. The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) provided funding for this.
Ideal charging conditions for port operation
With an output of up to 300 kW, there are a total of six so-called CCS2 fast-charging points at the Cruise Center Steinwerder for the daily transport and logistics operation in the port. The location was specifically chosen with a view to freight transport so that towing vehicles in particular do not have to unhitch. Technical expansion should demand increase is possible at any time. Mer and Cruise Gate Hamburg are thus fostering progressive electrification and contributing to sustainable logistics for the supply of cruise ships in the Port of Hamburg. The electricity used is 100 per cent generated from sustainable energy sources.
The project was implemented with the support of the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), its subsidiary Cruise Gate Hamburg (CGH) as well as the commercial vehicle and truck manufacturer IVECO. The fast-charging points help electrify the Port of Hamburg and provide the project partnership with important research data for future traffic flows and charging requirements.
Funding through the BMDV
The procurement of the charging infrastructure was funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport under the guideline for the promotion of light and heavy-duty commercial vehicles with alternative, climate-friendly drive systems and associated refuelling and charging infrastructure (KsNI) with a total of around 262,000 euros. The funding guideline is coordinated by NOW GmbH and applications are approved by the Federal Logistics and Mobility Office.
