On Tuesday, 1 February 2022, the final report on the HyExpert project H2BrakeCO2 was handed over to the Mayor of Brake, Michael Kurz, at a final meeting of the project partners in the Town Hall of Brake (Unterweser). During the event, the mayor thanked all participants for their target-oriented and cooperative efforts. Mr. Kurz emphasised that the final report will mark the beginning of further developments involving the hydrogen economy in the city of Brake and the region. The region participated as a HyExpert in the HyLand programme of the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV – Bundesministerium für Digitales und Verkehr). In particular, the approach of H2BrakeCO2 to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the port through the use of hydrogen has attracted both national and international attention.

During several public networking events, which unfortunately all needed to take place online due to the Corona situation, the project partners presented the interim results and the progress achieved in the project to all interested members of the public. Particular attention was directed to the potential CO2 savings offered by the port and road freight logistics of the city of Brake (Unterweser).

Participants from the fields of business and politics repeatedly made valuable contributions at the events. The project received prominent support from Lower Saxony’s Minister for the Environment, Energy, Building and Climate Protection Olaf Lies, as well as from the Lower Saxony Ministry of Economics, represented by Lars Bobzien. With keynote speeches at the network meetings, they continually emphasised the importance of H2BrakeCO2 for the city and the entire region.

As a HyExpert region, Brake was supported with funds of around 273,000 euros to create a concept for the development of a zero-carbon infrastructure through the use of hydrogen in the areas of port and road freight logistics. The project ran until 30 September 2021. The city’s goal is now to realise the concept in practice and to explore the funding opportunities available for this purpose. On Thursday, 10 February 2022, the seventh episode of “HyLunch”, the online lunchtime seminar of the HyLand programme, takes place at 12 noon. There, the project results and the further steps of the city of Brake will be presented in conclusion. Registration for the event is possible via the NOW GmbH event page. Further information on the HyLand programme can be found on the www.hy.land website (in German).
