Federal Minister Scheuer announces a further 16 winners in the BMVI “HyLand – Hydrogen Regions in Germany” initiative Funding provided by the National Innovation Programme Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP2): 13 HyExpert regions to receive €300,000 each for detailed concepts, 3 HyPerformer regions to receive €20 million each for the implementation of existing concepts Coordination with other German and European H2 regions to interconnect activities in a purposeful manner
Berlin, 12.12.2019 – A further 16 German regions will invest in hydrogen from renewable energies in the future: Andreas Scheuer, Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, today announced the winners of the HyLand competition as HyExperts and HyPerformers. This means that 13 HyExpert regions will each receive 300,000 euros to create and calculate concrete project ideas for hydrogen concepts. The three winners of the HyPerformer category will each receive 20 million euros in the form of investment grants to implement existing regional concepts with hydrogen and fuel cells. The three HyPerformers have a total project volume of 195 million euros.
The winners in the HyExperts category:
- City of Brake

- Lippe District
- District of Oberallgäu

Nine hydrogen regions were already announced in September 2019. As HyStarters, they will receive organisational and content-related support in training local stakeholders (policymakers, municipal companies, industry, commerce, society) and in jointly developing initial concepts for hydrogen and fuel cells on the basis of renewable energy not only in transport but also in the areas of heating, power and the storage of energy.
HyLand is part of the National Innovation Programme Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP), with the federally-owned NOW GmbH coordinating the initiative. The primary focus of the HyLand regions is the integration of renewable hydrogen in the transport sector to highlight its potential contribution to the achievement of CO2 reduction targets. In addition, the Federal Government is currently supporting 20 so-called “living labs” nationwide. In 12 of these, companies will test hydrogen technologies on an industrial scale in the future. The use of regional synergies here can increase the competitiveness of green hydrogen. The concept of hydrogen regions is also being implemented at the European level: The provinces of Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland in the north of the Netherlands are to be transformed into the “Hydrogen Valley”. The EU Commission provided 20 million euros for this purpose in October 2019. Coordination of the various activities will be decisive for the success of the projects and their broad impact on the market.
