With the newly issued "BordstromTech II" funding guideline, the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV) is extending support for measures to activate alternative technologies for environmentally friendly on-board and mobile shore-side power systems for sea-going and inland waterway vessels (BordstromTech II – Bordstrom- und mobile Landstromversorgung von See- und Binnenschiffen II).
BordstromTech II awards investment grants for the upgrading of sea-going and inland waterway vessels for on-board power generation from alternative energy sources such as batteries, hydrogen and alternative fuels, or for the procurement of mobile shore-side power systems in seaports and inland waterway ports. By substituting conventional diesel generators for on-board power generation, greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutant emissions are reduced at the same time. Particularly during ship lay times in seaports and inland ports or at transhipment sites and berths in Germany, the use of alternative technologies contributes to reducing air pollution.
With the electrification of ship energy systems, using alternative energy storage, energy converter, plug-in and power transfer technologies, energy efficiency gains are also being exploited to reduce the final energy consumption of fossil ship fuels. In addition, incentives are also being created for the development of supply infrastructures for alternative marine fuels.
Applications have been possible since 1 January 2023. Eligible recipients are both private and public sector companies in the shipping sector and the port industry.
