Green hydrogen for public transport: New filling station opens in Ludwigshafen am Rhein

Eight climate-friendly fuel cell range extender buses are now refuelling at the new hydrogen filling station. The hydrogen available at this filling station is green. Other types of vehicles can also refuel at the publicly accessible combination filling pump, which offers pressure levels of 350 and 700 bar.

The new filling station is part of the H2Rivers funding project, which is being implemented as part of the HyLand programme of the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV). The H2Rivers project is paving the way for the widespread market entry of emission-free hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in the mobility sector in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region and the central Neckar area. The development of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region as a hydrogen region is being funded by the BMV with up to €20 million in investment grants as part of the National Innovation Programme Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP2) as a winning region of the ‘HyLand – Hydrogen Regions in Germany’ programme and coordinated by Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar GmbH. The hydrogen filling station in Ludwigshafen am Rhein is receiving €1,284,000 in funding support for its part. The funding guidelines are coordinated by NOW GmbH and implemented by Project Management Jülich (PtJ).

The Ludwigshafen station is the third hydrogen filling station to be jointly realised by H2 MOBILITY and rnv. A hydrogen filling station was already opened last year in Heidelberg-Wieblingen at the new municipal depot for alternative drive systems and at the rnv depot in Mannheim. Other municipal companies and surrounding logistics firms are also benefiting from the new locations: All filling stations are open to the public and can refuel hydrogen vehicles at a pressure level of 350 and 700 bar.

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder: “Hydrogen and fuel cells are an important building block for climate-friendly mobility in the future. We are providing around 20 million euros in support for the HyPerformer region H2Rivers, which impressively demonstrates how innovative technologies work in everyday life. Such projects provide important impetus for modern and sustainable mobility. We are deliberately focusing on technological openness – because we need all climate-friendly drive systems to successfully drive the transition in mobility forward.”

Dagmar Fehler, Managing Director and Spokesperson for NOW GmbH: “The opening of the new hydrogen filling station in Ludwigshafen is a strong signal for Germany as a business location as well as for climate protection. Hydrogen plays a central role in the transformation of the transport sector because it can complement other forms of propulsion across all modes of transport in a sensible and climate-friendly manner. Future demand will be determined primarily by trucks and buses, which is why we need efficient and larger filling stations. On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport, we at NOW GmbH have been supporting the promotion and market development of these technologies since 2008. With projects such as H2Rivers, we are demonstrating how hydrogen can be successfully put into practice, from production to use in vehicles. Today’s opening is another important building block for the future of climate-friendly mobility.”
