Spedition Nanno Janssen freight company opens electric truck charging park in Leer

The KsNI-funded facility has the capacity to supply the company’s entire electric truck fleet.

On 18 June 2025, the freight company Spedition Nanno Janssen GmbH opened one of the most powerful charging parks for electric trucks in Germany. Located in Leer in the north of the country, the new facility was officially opened in the presence of guests from politics, business and the media – including Gitta Connemann, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, and Christian Hirte, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport – as well as numerous partners and long-standing associates.

The charging park marks a decisive step in the transformation of heavy goods transport at the freight forwarding company: with a 4-megawatt transformer, a 1.2-megawatt battery storage system and ten fast-charging stations, each with a capacity of 300 kW and two charging points, the facility has the capacity to efficiently supply the company’s entire fleet of electric trucks.

“What we are inaugurating today is more than just a charging park. It is a commitment – to responsibility, to innovation and to the future of mobility,” emphasised Managing Director Nanno Janssen in his speech at the opening of the facility.

Christian Hirte, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport: “Spedition Nanno Janssen is already operating electric trucks in European long-distance transport. Its commitment to sustainable mobility, supported by KsNI funding, clearly demonstrates how the electrification of heavy-duty transport can work and what the future of freight transport can look like. As a medium-sized company, Nanno Janssen sets standards and is a role model for climate-neutral logistics.”

KsNI funding enabled the switch

The fifth-generation family-run company decided to commit to electric mobility back in 2021. The basis for this decision is a funding package from the German government and the EU. A total of 6.5 million euros was provided by the Federal Ministry of Transport under the guideline for the promotion of light and heavy commercial vehicles with alternative, climate-friendly drives and the associated refuelling and charging infrastructure (KsNI – Richtlinie über die Förderung von leichten und schweren Nutzfahrzeugen mit alternativen, klimafreundlichen Antrieben und dazugehöriger Tank- und Ladeinfrastruktur). Part of this comes from the German Recovery and Resilience Plan (DARP – Deutschen Aufbau und Resilienzplans) via the European Recovery and Resilience Facility in the NextGenerationEU programme. The funding guideline is coordinated by NOW GmbH, and applications are approved by the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility.

Thanks to forward-looking cooperation with regional energy suppliers such as EWE, the energy supply for the charging park has been secured. “You can have every connection you need – you just have to lay the cable across the street,” was the pragmatic response to the request for sufficient power capacity.

E-truck fleet continues to grow

The fully electric fleet now comprises 27 vehicles from leading manufacturers such as Volvo, Scania, Mercedes-Benz, DAF, Iveco, BAX – and soon MAN. The vehicles are used in local and long-distance transport throughout Europe – from Spain to Sweden, from Italy to England. “Our experience shows that electric mobility works – today,” says Janssen.

A special highlight of today’s event: well-known influencer and driver Tobias Wagner, alias “Elektrotrucker” (“The Electric Trucker”), joined the team in July 2024 and reports on social media about his long-distance experiences with electric trucks. His reports reach an audience of millions and make an important contribution to the acceptance of the technology.
