The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI – Bundesministerium für Verkehr und digitale Infrastruktur) has approved funding for the development of the new technology as part of the federal government’s Mobility and Fuel Strategy (MKS – Mobilitäts- und Kraftstoffstrategie). The BMVI pilot project funding will provide a total of four PowerPacs for the environmentally friendly energy supply of container ships in the Port of Hamburg. These can supply power for up to 400 ship berths per year. In addition to massive reductions in local air pollutants, the four PowerPacs will also save up to 3,600 t of CO2 annually.
The PowerPac is a compact unit the size of two 40-foot containers that combines a gas-powered generator and an LNG tank. As soon as the Hapag-Lloyd container ship is moored, the PowerPac is brought on board from the terminal. It supplies the ship with power during its berth in the port. This significantly reduces pollutant emissions, which otherwise occur when operating the auxiliary diesel engines of the respective ships.
