Electric mobility at home: New guide for multi-party buildings

With the aim of making electric mobility suitable for everyday use in residential buildings, the National Centre for Charging Infrastructure of NOW GmbH has published a new guide with information for owners, tenants and property managers.

The guide, entitled ‘Easy charging in multi-family homes’ (‘Einfach laden an Mehrparteienhäusern’), offers concrete assistance for the installation and operation of charging infrastructure in residential buildings and answers key legal and technical questions about charging in shared buildings.

Dagmar Fehler, CEO and Spokesperson for NOW GmbH: “There are around 21 million multi-party houses and almost 9 million parking spaces not on public roads in Germany – a huge potential for expanding the charging infrastructure. The new guide shows how this can be exploited and how charging facilities can be created directly at residential buildings.”

The publication highlights key aspects such as determining demand, legal rights and consent requirements, as well as the technical integration of charging infrastructure into existing electrical installations. Particular attention is paid to practical solutions for typical scenarios and challenges in multi-party buildings, such as shared ownership, limited grid connection capacity or shared parking spaces. Topics such as billing, access control and the integration of renewable energies are also covered.

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder: “Electric mobility must be easy to use for everyone in everyday life. The new guide is an important step towards strengthening the charging infrastructure where many people live – in multi-party buildings. In this way, we are continuing to drive forward the transition to climate-friendly mobility.”

The guide is now available (in German) free of charge on the website of the National Centre for Charging Infrastructure.
