NOW GmbH has been involved in this extensive programme since its inception. Aimed at research and development and, especially since its continuation in 2016, also at projects and plans that support market introduction. The ultimate goals of the National Innovation Programme Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP) are nothing less than climate protection and a sustainable economy.

Based on the hydrogen and fuel cell technology government programme 2016 to 2026, the interministerial National Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP) ensures on the one hand, continuity for research and development, and on the other it addresses the support required for the market activation of first products.

NIP is implemented through relevant measures of participating federal ministries. The BMVI is initially investing 250 million euros until 2019 to support hydrogen and fuel cell technology. On 29/9/2016, the Funding guideline for “Research, development and innovation measures“ was published.

With the funding guideline: “Market activation measures in the National Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Phase 2 (focusing on sustainable mobility)” from 17 February 2017, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) supports market activation for products which have reached technical market maturity but are not yet competitive, as a precursor to market ramp-up.

The BMWi is continuing its funding of hydrogen and fuel cell technology in the area of applied research and development within the 6th Energy Research Programme in the amount of around 25 million euros annually. Additionally the BMWi initiated a funding programme in August 2016 within the framework of the National Action Plan on Energy Efficiency (NAPE) for the purchase of fuel cell heating systems for private customers.

As was already the case during the first NIP phase, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), as well as Education and Research continue to be actively involved via the structures of NOW GmbH in the strategic organisation of the NIP.
