Funding for Climate-Friendly Rail Transport

Economic aspects impede complete electrification with overhead lines on routes with low frequency. On the non-electrified routes, conventional rail vehicles with diesel engines are almost exclusively used. In order to reduce emissions in rail transport, in addition to expanding the rail network electrified with overhead lines, innovative drive systems with reduced CO2 emissions are to be used on routes without electrification.

The aim of this funding guideline is to increase the proportion of low-emission drives in rail transport. This is intended to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector and thus to the achievement of the climate protection goals enshrined in the Federal Climate Protection Act.

Measures under this funding guideline include supporting companies and public transport authorities in the procurement of rail vehicles with innovative, low-emission drives for passenger and freight transport and in the construction of refueling or charging infrastructure for these rail vehicles. In addition, feasibility studies to investigate the use of alternative drives in rail transport are also supported under the guideline.
