Dr. Klaus Bonhoff
Responsible for the overall programme, company representative for external affairs, international activities.
Received his doctorate in 1998 following engineering studies at the RWTH Aachen (Germany) and the ENSTA, Paris, at the Institute for Energy Process Engineering of the Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH (Jülich Research Centre). He commenced his professional career as Assistant to the Executive Board at Jülich Research Centre in the area of Energy and Materials Research before taking on the role of Acting Director of the fuel cell project.
In 2001, Dr. Bonhoff switched to industry, where he headed the area of fuel cell market development in Europe at Ballard Power Systems GmbH. In 2003, he moved to DaimlerChrysler AG, holding several positions in the area of alternative drives and fuel cell development. Among his responsibilities were the subjects of strategy, communication, worldwide demonstration projects, government programmes and market development.
In connection with this work, Dr. Bonhoff acted on behalf of DaimlerChrysler AG as Spokesperson of the German Strategic Council on Hydrogen and Fuel Cells, Chairman of the “Transportation” Working Group of the Implementation Panel of the European Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Platform (HFP), Chairman of the steering committee of the Clean Energy Partnership Berlin (CEP), and a member of the Executive Committee of the World Executive Committee of the World Fuel Council / FC Europe.
Since 2008, Dr. Bonhoff is Managing Director (Chair) of NOW GmbH National Organisation Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology. In addition he is an honorary member of the board of trustees of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (Freiburg) and the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (Stuttgart) as well as on the advisory boards of erdgas mobil (Berlin) and NEXT ENERGY EWE-Forschungszentrum für Energietechnologie e. V. (Oldenburg).

Completed training as a precision engineer in 1976, then emigrated to South Africa for two years. Qualified as an engineer in product engineering in 1987 at Furtwangen University. In 1993 qualified as an environmental engineer NDS HTL at the Ingenieurschule beider Basel (now the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland).
Mr. Axthammer then became Technical Advisor for four years at the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association (ZVEI). Following this, he worked for five years as a management consultant for management systems in environmental areas (ISO, EMAS), as well as total quality management (ISO, EFQM) for investment management, controlling, mergers & acquisitions and corporate restructuring. He was also active in companies spanning various sectors in roles such as Project Manager, Head of Marketing and Managing Director.
Over another three years he took on the role of management consultant in network and cluster management, strategic management, innovation management and technology marketing primarily in the areas of new materials, CFRP, nanomaterials, surface technology and fuel cell technology.
Since 2008 he is Programme Manager for Special Markets at NOW GmbH and was also appointed as Managing Director of NOW GmbH in December 2012.
