Tasks

NOW GmbH (National Organisation Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology) is responsible for the coordination and management of the National Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP) and the Electromobility Model Regions programme of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI). In addition, NOW also supports the BMVI in the continued development of the Mobility and Fuel Strategy as well as for the implementation of EU Directive 2014/94/EU on the development of alternative fuels infrastructure (CPT).

Market preparation as a mission

Mobility and energy supply solutions of the future must be efficient and low in emissions. The technology in the fields of hydrogen, fuel cells and battery electric drives harbour a great potential for clean mobility, the efficient supply of power and heat as well as a storage medium for renewable energies.

Industry, science and government have recognised this and are working on the market preparation of these technologies through strategic alliances.

Both are programmes to support the market preparation of the corresponding technologies. Besides research and development activities, a main focus of support is on demonstration projects.

The primary task of NOW is to initiate and evaluate projects and to bundle these in an appropriate manner – for example in terms of geographic regions and/or thematic aspects – in order to exploit the potential to achieve as many synergies as possible.

In addition, NOW also takes cross-cutting themes into account. These incorporate subjects such as production technology, education and training, communication at the interface of government, industry and science, as well as public relations in order to raise the public profile of these technologies and related products, along with international cooperation.

NOW is also commissioned by the BMVI to support the continued development of the Mobility and Fuel Strategy as well as implementation of EU Directive 2014/94/EU on the development of alternative fuels infrastructure (CPT). Specifically, NOW provides support for the establishment of an overall strategy taking individual fuel options into account, assesses the positions of key players and coordinates projects with German involvement within the scope of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T).
